Restoring nature, one garden at a time.

Welcome to Wild Garden Writing, where we strive to help individuals discover the wonders of their own gardens and the native wildlife that they can support. As a retired garden designer, I have dedicated my post-retirement years to sharing my knowledge and passion for nature through writing. Our gardens serve as perfect habitats for wildlife, and with the implementation of rewilding principles, they can be transformed into thriving ecosystems that benefit both nature and ourselves. Each garden, no matter how small, can contribute to increasing biodiversity, improving mental and physical wellbeing, and mitigating environmental challenges.

Our gardens in context

In the United Kingdom, traditional gardens often feature a lawn, which collectively cover 308,880 acres. The environmental impact of weekly mowing is significant, with 45,000,000 litres of petrol consumed and 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted annually. By promoting meadow lawns with diverse root systems, carbon capture can be improved by 10%, equivalent to the annual domestic emissions of HGVs in the UK * (Archie Thomas, Communications Manager, Plantlife). In this section, we explore the role of gardens within their surroundings and how they can positively impact the environment.

Regenerate, reconnect, restore

Reconnecting with nature and actively participating in its restoration is crucial for our personal growth and the wellbeing of our planet. In this section, we discuss the principles of regeneration and the steps we can take to create thriving wildlife habitats within our gardens. By embracing change and understanding the importance of disturbance and diversity, we can contribute to the overall health of local ecosystems.

Embracing change

Adapting to changes in our environment is essential for the successful implementation of rewilding principles. In this section, we delve into the necessity of embracing change and the role it plays in fostering a thriving wildlife habitat. We also explore the relationship between human intervention and the natural progression of ecosystems.

Disturbance, dispersal, and diversity

Understanding the principles of disturbance and dispersal is vital for promoting biodiversity within our gardens. In this section, we discuss the importance of these concepts and how they contribute to the creation of dynamic, resilient ecosystems.

Wildlife

Our gardens can provide safe habitats for numerous native wildlife species. In this section, we focus on the various forms of wildlife that can be attracted to our gardens and the steps we can take to support their survival.
