Suzandy Caning & Furniture

At SuzandyCrafts, we are a husband and wife team, Susan and Malcolm Routh, based in Buckerell, near Honiton, Devon. We relocated from Maidenhead, Berkshire in May 2013, making us a popular stop for those traveling from London and the home counties to Devon and Cornwall.

Susan holds a BA (Hons) in Furniture Restoration from Buckinghamshire New University. With her extensive knowledge and expertise, she specializes in the exacting finishing styles of French and continental caning, with a particular interest in Thonet and other bentwood furniture. Her methods of caning are historically correct, ensuring that every piece restored is of the highest quality.

Our Services

We offer a range of services, including replacing woven seating on chairs, stools, and other furniture using cane, seagrass, Danish and other paper cords, and riempie. We also undertake limited repairs to Lloyd loom and 'wicker' and can carry out some structural repairs and restoration using traditional techniques and materials.

What We Sell

We sell a variety of items, including antique and vintage pieces, mainly chairs. We are particularly interested in child/doll-size and folding chairs, especially steamer chairs - the smaller and more interesting the better. We always have a stock of small Victorian bedroom chairs that make ideal occasional chairs for entertaining, especially at Christmas. However, be sure to put your most delicate guest on the most delicate chair!

All items for sale can be found on our For Sale Page. We also have a very large selection of chairs that are "ripe for restoration" for those of you who would like to Do It Yourselves.

We also sell materials such as cane, seagrass, real South African white riempies, and raw riempie. Download instructions for DIY riempieing are available on our website.

Where We Sell

Our items are available for purchase from our workshop/showroom at Little Glebe, Glebe Farmhouse, Buckerell, Nr Honiton. Please ring before visiting. We also participate in various shows during the summer months. For details of all the above, see our News Page.
