We are committed to working with our clients to design sustainable solutions and implement alternative technologies, producing designs that are not only beneficial to the environment but also tailored to our clients' needs. Our personal approach ensures that our clients receive the highest level of service, from initial consultation through to project completion.

Sustainable Design

At JMP Architects, our design approach prioritises sustainability, with the aim of minimising energy use and reducing carbon emissions. We achieve this by designing buildings that utilise less energy, employing materials with lower embodied carbon, and focusing on the building envelope. A well-insulated, high-quality build will reduce the energy needed for heating, offering significant cost savings. It is more cost-effective to save energy than to generate it.

The global climate emergency and the need for sustainable design have never been more pressing. As the earth's temperature rises, we are experiencing more frequent and extreme weather events, including hurricanes, heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and flooding. Building design and construction contribute significantly to carbon emissions and global warming. By reducing energy demand for heating or cooling buildings, we can make a substantial impact on global warming. Improving building fabric is key to reducing CO2 emissions in the average UK home.

In line with the United Nations' Paris Agreement, the European Commission aims to be "net-zero" by 2050, and the UK Building Regulations Standards must align with this goal. The proposed Building Regulations update aims to ensure that all new homes will produce 31% less carbon emissions compared to current standards by 2022, while the governments proposed Future Homes Standard aims to ensure that all new homes built will produce 75-80% less carbon emissions compared to current standards by 2025.

At JMP Architects, we are committed to promoting and implementing sustainable design principles. We adhere to voluntary standards such as the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) Design Standard and certification, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 70% compared to current standards, and the AECB Retrofit Standard, which promotes good thermal performance and comfort in existing buildings. We also work with the Passivhaus and EnerPHit standards, which prioritise energy efficiency, passive design, and the reduction of greenhouse gases.
