Thomson & Son is a family-run builders' merchant serving the Barry and Vale of Glamorgan community for over three decades. Established in 1986, we have grown from a timber importer to a comprehensive supplier of building materials, catering to a wide range of tradespeople. Our History

Thomson & Son's story began in 1986 as a timber importer, initially supplying the pallet and fencing industries. Our vision expanded considerably in 1993 when we established connections with burgeoning sawmills in Latvia, following the country's emergence from the Soviet era. This marked the beginning of our journey into direct timber production, with substantial investments made in a Latvian sawmill and forestry company.

The company's Latvian operations flourished, processing over 120,000 cubic meters of softwood annually and producing a wide range of sawn timber products, agricultural fencing, and garden fencing. The success in Latvia allowed us to expand our reach, exporting to destinations across Europe, the United States, and Japan. Our commitment to quality and reliability established a strong reputation in the international timber market.

Building a Local Presence

The late Managing Director, Mr. Ian Thomson, envisioned opening an independent builders' merchant in Barry, his home town, and in 2006, that vision became a reality. This move allowed us to further solidify our commitment to the local community, providing a locally-owned and operated resource for all their building material needs.
