Preserving the past, building the future

Welcome to the website of Traditional Carpentry and Joinery, a small family-run business based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. We are dedicated to providing high-quality repairs and maintenance for traditional half-timbered and historic buildings, as well as purpose-made joinery for both commercial and domestic projects.

Our team consists of experienced craftsmen who have been in the trade for decades. Robert Steele, the founder of the business, began his career as an apprentice in 1968 and achieved his City and Guild in Carpentry & Joinery and Advanced craft. After gaining valuable experience working for local builders, Robert decided to become self-employed in 1984. Since then, he has built a successful business with a strong reputation for delivering top-quality work.

In 1997, Robert's youngest son, Stephen, joined the business. Stephen completed his apprenticeship under the guidance of his father, demonstrating a keen interest and attention to detail from the start. In 2004, Stephen was awarded the prestigious William Morris Fellowship, a unique award for outstanding craftsmen involved in historic repairs. This training has further enhanced his skills and experience in the art of restoration and repair.

Our Services

We are passionate about preserving and restoring historic buildings to their former glory. Our services include repairs and maintenance of half-timbered structures, purpose-made joinery, and sash window repairs. We understand the importance of maintaining the original character of these buildings while ensuring they are safe and functional for modern use.

Our team is dedicated to delivering the highest standards of workmanship, and we pride ourselves on our attention to detail and commitment to quality. We believe in maintaining the integrity of the original building materials and techniques, while also incorporating modern solutions where necessary to ensure the longevity of the structure.

We work closely with our clients to understand their needs and preferences, ensuring that every project meets their expectations. Our team is experienced in working on both large and small projects, from individual sash windows to entire building restorations.

Events and Training

Over the years, we have been involved in various events and training programs aimed at promoting the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. In 2006, Robert and Stephen participated in a lime day at Ty Mawr, where they gave a talk and demonstration on sash window repairs.

In 2008, Stephen was invited to give a full-day talk and demonstration at Llandrindod Wells, focusing on repairs to sash windows and timber purchases. The event was attended by architects, conservation officers, and other interested clients.

Later in the same year, Stephen was asked to give a demonstration at the NEC Birmingham for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. The event aimed to showcase traditional repair methods to the general public, trade, architects, and other interested parties. Stephen demonstrated how to re-cord a sash and explained the process of adding insulation to the window, along with other details.

These events have not only allowed us to share our knowledge and skills but have also provided us with opportunities to learn from other experts in the field and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and materials.
